Why Convert Spring Rates?

Different industries and regions use various units to measure spring rates. Converting these units accurately is essential to ensure compatibility and performance for your applications. This is also helpful when converting from standard to metric spring I.D.'s (Inner Diameter), or vice versa, as spring lengths will differ from unit of measurement to another.

The three common units for spring rates are:

  • lbs/in = Pounds (lb) of force it takes to compress a spring 1 in.
  • kg/mm = Kilograms (kg) of force it takes to compress a spring 1 mm
  • N/mm = Newtons (N) of force it takes to compress a spring 1 mm

How do I know what rates I have?

Springs are offered in both standard and metric configurations. Standard spring rates are measured in lbs/in, and metric in kg/mm.

Estimate Spring Rates

(Helical Compression)

Note: This tool is designed for reference purposes only in order to help determine an approximate rate of existing unmarked helical round wire compression coil springs. There are many variables which are not represented in these calculations, therefore results are estimates and may vary.
