It’s no secret that Yellow Speed Racing coilovers have featured on many event winning cars over the years in all continents and this year proved no different as we caught up with Paul Cunnington a.k.a Pauly C to find out how his 2023 season went. Earlier this year, we hooked Paul’s 850 horsepower 2JZ powered Silvia S15 up with a set of our Advanced Pro Plus Racing 2-way Drift Spec coilovers as he wanted to take his suspension game to the next level.

After a season of top level competition in the MSUK Drift Pro Championship, we caught up with Paul to get his thoughts on his new suspension setup and how his new coilovers made all the difference!

“Now that the dust has settled on the 2023 season, I’ve had a bit of time to reflect on the year and give a review of the Yellow Speed Racing coilovers that have been used on the car.

At the start of the season we didn’t get as much testing as we hoped for coming into our first competitive event! However, we did manage to get the fronts coilovers on the car prior to some demonstration runs at Castle Combe. Unfortunately, as the car was still being built up again, the rears were not ready to install at that time.

Our initial feedback with the front coilovers in place was positive, although it was difficult to really be able to scrutinise the coilovers because we didn’t have the rears installed and generally I hadn’t been in the seat for a while and I was still finding my feet with the car.

Fast forward a couple of months to the first round of the MSUK Drift Pro Championship at Cadwell Park, we took a gamble & installed the rears untested. The car was aligned to our usual settings & after some conversations with “shockin”, we selected some fairly basic settings to the coilovers. This involved adjusting both the bump & rebound settings. We then went out for our first laps of the season to see what we could do.

To my amazement, the suspension worked incredibly well straight out of the box! We had total control of the car; making transitions more predictable. This gave me more confidence on initiation and much more straight line grip. A competitor even remarked, “How on earth are you going up the hill so fast? I just keep spinning!” The most important thing for me though, was being able to get on the door of my rivals far easier than I have ever done before, as the car is able to find grip and push on to where I need it to be.

In the past I had always struggled with grip against fast cars like Ian ‘Bizz’ Phillips LSZ, Josh King’s V8 E36 and Ryan Hughes GT86. Laying the power down to the asphalt was always a challenge, but clearly not anymore!

The first round of the weekend saw us earn a podium finish which was amazing! Unfortunately, the second round of the weekend ended early thanks to a damaged throttle body, but we still clinched a top 4 finish.

For those that have been following my progress this season, you’ll know that we suffered catastrophic engine failure at Brands Hatch, which was actually caught on camera by the Tegiwa media team. This put us out of competition for a short while.

However, we managed to make it back onto the grid for Donington Park & Go Japan at Brands Hatch. This time round we had a completely new engine setup (thanks to a severely damaged wallet!) During these rounds, as you can imagine, my confidence wasn’t at it’s usual high, so annoyingly we didn’t make it past the top 8.

The final round of the season was at Snetterton. We were blessed with good weather (which was a shock in October) and the fire inside me had been reignited.

The track is very challenging to get right. The turns are awkward & there’s lots of moments of going very fast to very slow, but when it all comes together it’s very rewarding.

The suspension really came into its own that weekend and showed what a great system it is. The start line is essentially a drag race to the first turn. I was at such an advantage as there wasn’t a single car that could drive away from me and much to my disbelief, I was driving away from some of the faster cars, leaving them standing!

The first turn is a medium right hander which you really have to be flat to the mat to make a tight hairpin. Again, having the ability to not only drive away from my competitors, but be able to slow the car down braking later than I had done in the past was a real advantage.

Coming out of the hairpin there is a long ‘manji’ across the track into a seriously fast left hander. The transitions through the track felt effortless & gave me the confidence to be able to be on full throttle for longer.

With my new found confidence in the car thanks to the Yellow Speed Racing coilovers, we qualified in first place and secured the top spot on the podium too! This was was a great end to the 2023 season, especially given some of the challenges we had thrown at us.

On reflection, the YSR suspension has been the one thing that has just worked this year. We pretty much installed it straight out of the box and we have had zero issues with it. We can’t believe the results that we have achieved this season, given that we’re only on the most basic of settings! During the off-season, the suspension setup is something that i’m going to explore in greater detail, as they have much more potential to offer. Watch out for us in 2024!”

We can’t wait to see how Paul continues to develop his S15 next season with his Yellow Speed Racing coilovers. We’re hopeful that he can secure plenty of podiums and silverware and mount a bid for the title challenge too!

Paul currently drives a custom-built Nissan Silvia S15, which is powered by a Toyota 2JZ engine, producing an impressive 840 horsepower. This season we’ve hooked him up with a set of our brand new Advanced Pro Plus Racing 2-way Drift Spec coilovers to help take his suspension game to the next level. The front coilovers on this system are inverted and feature a remote reservoir with an 18″ hose so that the canister can be mounted in the engine bay. This allows for extra oil capacity to help dissipate heat more effectively and the coilovers can perform more consistently when pushing the car to the limits. The rear remote reservoir includes a hard pipe for extra reliability when driving on the limit. They also feature a dry break connector too, so the shock can quickly be taken off and adjusted without removing the whole system!

Paul has been competing since 2017 and after taking victory in a round of Drift Cup back in 2018, Paul has established himself as one of the top drivers in the sport. Since then, he’s earned multiple podium finishes and achieved as high as 3rd in the Drift Pro Championship in 2021. With our new partnership we aim to showcase the performance of Yellow Speed Racing suspension products in real-world conditions. Paul’s feedback and expertise will help us in further improving our products and expanding our reach within the drifting community.

As the European distributor for Yellow Speed Racing, we’ve had the pleasure of working with plenty of different people over the years. One of whom is Pro Drift Driver, Adam Simmons. Adam has been around the BDC paddock for many years now and is a well established name in the drifting scene. After previously running a Nissan Skyline with the Slide Motorsport team, Adam now has a pretty unique car that you often don’t see in competition use. An E85 BMW Z4. Not your ordinary Z4 though, this particular example now has an almighty LS3 bolted in up front, boasting an almighty 500bhp! With the car being one of the best presented on the grid, it’s easy to see why we were keen to sponsor Adam and have him representing the Yellow Speed Racing brand throughout the season.

Now, sponsorship can often be seen as a one way partnership, but that’s definitely not the case here. Adam and his team are amongst the best when it comes to providing a plethora of high-quality content for us to use in our marketing campaigns, and quite simply can’t do enough for us. For example, when we asked Adam to come down to Tegiwa HQ and shred the LSZ4 for a YouTube feature, he was more than happy to do so. You can check out that video, here.

In return, we’ve supplied Adam with a set of Dynamic Pro Drift coilovers and his custom OMP One-Art Race Suit which was custom designed in-house right here at Tegiwa, as well as a variety of different parts over the years. So, when Adam asked us to spend the day with him at Teeside for the British Drift Championship Media Day, it was an offer that we simply couldn’t refuse.

Let’s go drifting!

With a charged Porsche Taycan (charging anxiety intensified throughout the day which you’ll be able to see in our upcoming YouTube video), we made our way up to Teeside Autodrome.

Not only was Adam kind enough to take us out for some adrenaline-filled LS powered passenger laps, he also let Luke loose behind the wheel of his Z4 too! Luke and Johnny also had the pleasure of spending some time in an E46 330i with Yogi from PHDrift. He taught them both the basics of what’s required to get sideways and within a couple of laps both drivers were getting some keen angle and linking the corners together. We highly recommend getting in touch with him if you want to have a go at drifting or learning more about how to get your car sideways!

Ryan’s 2JZ S15

We also caught up with our other YSR sponsor, Ryan Toporowski, who pilots a 750bhp 3.4 stroker 2JZ swapped Silvia S15. Toppo also runs a set of Dynamic Pro Drift coilovers as well as our big brake kit at both the front and rear of the car. Certainly one of the most eye catching cars on the grid, it was great to see Ryan putting the car through its paces on the day. You can read more about his car in our sponsor feature, here.

We see so many great builds come out of the parts that we supply to you – our happy customers. Below you’ll find the cars that we’ve supplied parts for and the respective championship that they’ll be racing in (if applicable).

Craig Weaver – Honda Civic EP3

Craig has been a customer of ours for quite some time but when we saw he was on a mission to raise as much awareness as possible for IBD/Crohn’s and Colitis, we knew this was a cause we had to get behind. Craig combines his love for motorsport and passion to generate awareness around Crohn’s and Colitis to form driventofightuk. 2022 will see Craig attending plenty of track days and shows and we can’t wait to help him gain as much exposure as possible for this very worthy cause.

The Honda S2000 is designed for RWD, high-revving, naturally aspirated thrills. However, Ben Hoswell’s incredible build takes that notion and cranks it all the way up to 11.
Ben has owned the car for just over a year now. He bought it from his good friend James Waterfield, the man behind the engineering to this incredible piece of machinery. James originally purchased it with the intention to use it as a track car, but then Ben got his hands on it, and we’re pretty glad he did.

Engine

The F20 block is mated to a HKS GT2 supercharger that kicks out 400hp – an extra 150 horsepower over standard. It comes as no surprise that this is Ben’s favourite modification, pointing out that this completely unlocked the S2000’s full potential.

Look a bit deeper and there’s some more HKS goodies to be found too, an iconic green HKS mushroom intake and a HKS intercooler keep things cool. Running this much power means changes to the fuel system, so in come DW 1,000cc injectors and an AEM 340lph fuel pump. This is all managed by an AEM standalone engine management system to make sure everything is running as it should be. Look underneath the car and there’s some more JDM goodness to be found, with a Fujitsubo Legalis R manifold, decat and cat-back exhaust system that see some tasty flames kicking out the rear!

Suspension

Capitalising on the S2000’s aggressive look, a set of BC Racing coilovers are dialled in to give the car one hell of a mean stance. Hardrace, Blox and Polybush are all big names in the suspension industry so it’s easy to see why Ben has opted to upgrade suspension components like fully adjustable camber arms and chassis braces with these brands so he can make the most out of the incredible chassis that the S2000 is famous for.

Brakes

Taking care of bringing the S2000 to a halt is a K Sport 8 piston big brake kit with floating discs. These are neatly tucked away behind a set of 18” Rota wheels that we’ll talk a little bit more about in a second.

Exterior

Speaking of the aggressive stance the S2K has to offer, we should address its incredible silhouette. To accommodate the super-wide Rota MXR wheels, 11J front and 12J rears, is a Circuit Garage carbon fibre wide arch kit. A Seibon carbon vented bonnet and CSL style boot lid also feature along with RX-7 carbon side skirts and a Voltex carbon front bumper and lower splitter. As you can see, some craftsmanship has gone into the rear of the car with cut, tubbed and welded rear quarter panels mated to a JDM rear bumper and Aero Spec R corners.

There really isn’t an angle that this car doesn’t look good at, especially with the exposed carbon weave and BMW Atlantis Blue metallic paint that was originally found on the F80 M3. Rear Depo lights and an AP2 headlight conversion help to freshen up the S2000 and give it a super clean look.

Interior

Venture into the cockpit and it’s equally as crazy as the exterior. Sparco Pro Race 2000 seats hold Ben firmly as he’s sending it down the lanes. A Tegiwa triple gauge pod featuring a GReddy boost and oil pressure gauge along with an AEM AFR gauge mean that Ben can keep an eye on what’s going on under the bonnet. There’s plenty of custom parts too; a Qube Engineering custom white LED instrument cluster, piano black trim and Bride door cards and arm rest take this build to the next level and show the level of detail that’s going into the project.

What’s next?

Ben is far from finished with his AP1; he’s currently got a few changes lined up which include and a half carbon Mugen style hardtop and J’S Racing carbon side skirts. Along with a refresh under the bonnet, he’ll also be repainting the engine bay so that’s the next big job on the never-ending list when building a modified car.

We’ve now got the pleasure of working with Ben as he’s the latest recruit to join our sponsorship scheme. We can’t wait to see the next chapter of this S2000 unfold and we’re looking forward to helping him on his journey. Make sure you drop him a follow on his Instagram – @benji.s2000build, and give him a shout at some shows this year!

Let’s start by talking about his weapon of choice, his Nissan Silvia S15. Now if you’re familiar with Topo, you’ll know that he’s on the Pro 2 driver list in the British Drift Championship. Like many drift builds it’s pretty rare that you see the car retain the engine that it left the factory with, and Ryan’s S15 is no exception. Now armed with a 3.4 stroker Toyota 2JZ up front, mated up to a Samsonas sequential gear box the Hulk themed S15 kicks out a whopping 702bhp!

Speaking of the Hulk themed S15, Topo is part of the Skid Risk Drift Team, which features Dan Ball’s 7.4 LSX V8 swapped S15 with an array of YSR gear, all with the same famous green Marvel character livery.

Topo’s S15 is running a whole host of YSR goodies including our Air Jacks, 3-Way Dynamic Pro Drift Coilovers and an Ultra Grand Big Brake Kit. A common misconception when it comes to drifting is that to get the car to slide you need to run a loose setup, but in fact it’s the total opposite. The reality is that the cars are dialed in to be as grippy as possible, allowing the driver to control the car with both forward grip to maximize speed, and side grip to maximize precision. Topo has commented on what a massive difference the YSR parts have made to the grip levels of the S15 which should stand him in good stead for the upcoming season.

Next on the list of things to do is to take the Hulk theme up another level with a custom OMP One-Art race suit, gloves, boots and bucket seats. These will look absolutely mega when finished as OMP have the ability to completely customize the products thanks to the totally printed, custom designs. Here’s a preview of what they’ll look like when finished.

Topo is a well known figure in the drifting community, he’s certainly come along way from spending hours at Birmingham Wheels with his mates Skylines to gaining his BDC license and becoming an established competitor in the championship. We wish him and the Skid Risk team all the best for the 2020 BDC season and will hopefully see him in action soon!

It started with a phone call, it led to a gold mine.

A little while ago we had a phone call from a new customer called Tom (@t800oms), I picked up the phone and was asked if we can do coilovers for Nissan Silvia S15’s (we do!). Being an S-Chassis owner myself I felt the need to enquire about the car, Tom was more than happy to talk about it and unbeknownst to me I was already down the rabbit hole.

He told me that the car already had some air-jacks fitted, and was keen to run our suspension too – allowing him to stick to the same colour palette and rep the Yellow Speed Racing brand. To make Tom’s new suspension a one off scenario he chose to go with external pigtailed reservoirs, letting him show off not only YSR’s handiwork but also to let his builder incorporate them into the design of the car. At that point we made a deal, I’d drop them off if I could shoot the car when I got there, and what you see here is the result of that.

Nestled in the Lincolnshire countryside was a small slice of JDM heaven, not too dissimilar from the small shops you’d see dotted around japan. Where Steve (@sr_autobodies), the builder works his magic on not only Tom’s S15 – but a selection of wild projects from a multitude of different backgrounds.

Lets just establish that this isn’t a race car, it is just a full on build, top to toe.

As I rocked up to the unit enclosing SR Autobodies, I was greeted with a couple of PS13’s as well as an immaculate R32 GTR – which is feature worthy in itself. As we chatted, more and more JDM niceties came to light, rare Parts Shop Max products, numerous bodykits. It’s safe to say the S-Chassis man in me was in Mecca.

Having previously browsed through both Tom’s and Steve’s respective Instagrams I was well aware of the work going on, but there is a stark difference between photo’s and seeing something like this in the flesh.

The biggest and perhaps most obvious modification to the car is, well the lack of original car. Tubing was always on the cards, but after kink in the chassis was discovered Steve urged Tom to send it from the cabin forward. And send it he did.

The frame overall matches a lot of the dimensions given by the OEM parts, meticulous measurement and careful studying has made fitting parts, like our suspension, a momentary job. However clever nuances have been made to make certain elements of the build a lot easier, access points for components way down the lines. A great example is the top mounts, whilst retaining their OEM bolt pattern, the design now allows for the mounts to be rotated.

Such attention to detail has been continuous, our air-jacks have been mounted impeccably on the frame front and rear. Boxed within gusseted and dimple died mounts, not only providing a good looking display but an incredibly structurally sound platform for the car to be raised with. We all look forward to seeing the suspension reservoirs on show in the same manner! The efforts taken to tie everything in properly has led to some interesting practices in getting the chassis together, people having to put wire through windows to ensure a continuous TIG weld.

However the fruits of their labour can be displayed with ease, even in to the latter stages of the build the car will be able to be stripped down – and show off the handiwork gone into it. Right now the guys are a while off of that, and with all of the tube frame exposed this is probably the best time to see the chassis in its purest form.

The more you look around this car, the more detail you see has gone into it, and its entirely functional. Again gusseted in all the right places, strengthening these key components then dimple dying it further to introduce more strength whilst shaving some weight off – lets not forget a lot of the factory has been binned off. Thus leaving the remaining chassis a tad more fragile then it would have been out of the factory, so this framework has righted that.

Incredibly there is yet more to do on this before prior to getting the engine buttoned up within the car, some parts like the Tomei Expreme manifold fitted to give an idea of the space the Notchtop SR needs. Steve will be doing his trademark Samurai style front end to finish it off, as well as tubs, to give it the full treatment.

Right now this is a great way to show off the Yellow Speed Racing components that will be adorning the car, the custom Dynamic Pro Drift suspension will perform as good as it looks on the car – and the gold accents stand out beautifully on the car as it sits right now.

I can’t thank Tom and Steve enough for letting me snap the build so far, and the brews, I’ll be sure to keep this build updated. It’s rare that you get to document progress such as so when it isn’t in close contact like our own M4 build, but this is the other end of the spectrum and I can’t wait to see the build take shape more.

We get asked a lot here for sponsorship. We see so many great builds come out of the parts that we supply to you – our happy customers. We’re proud that our parts bring you one step closer to finishing your projects, even if a project rarely ever is finished. So, we want to highlight those builds and racers that have gone that extra mile.

The process is simple, if you think your ride meets our standards, then download our form, fill it in and send it back to us. We estimate that there will be more than a few entries, so feedback won’t be instantaneous, but we’ll review every entry we get. We’ll endeavour to get back to as many applicants as possible.

What happens if I don’t hear back from you? Unfortunately this means you didn’t make the cut this time round. However, keep working on your ride and who knows what could happen!

Putting your project out there is important to us. You’re proud of your handiwork and we’re proud to sell you the parts to make your build that bit more special – so get it out there! Shows, social media, track days, race weekends etc. We’d like high quality (SLR) photos to use for promotion and our own social media platforms. We’ll show the world the quality of your build whilst highlighting the parts we sell.

It is important to remember that this program applies to your car only, consider it a badge of honour, proper recognition for the time and hard work you’ve put into your car. You’ll have access to some goodies that are not available to our regular customers also.

Whether its a street car, track car or a race car we want to see it. Remember, all Tegiwa sponsored 750 Motor Club championships, Time Attack and Drift Pro competitors are automatically eligible for a Tegiwa sponsor account.

Simply head over to Tegiwa.com and head to the sponsorship application page. Once you’ve filled in the details and submitted images of your car we’ll then review the application in due course. See below the list of expected images to include in your application.

Vehicle Photography
Front and rear exterior photos
Side profile photos, both left and right
One overall engine bay photo
Additional photos of anything else you think might help you get accepted
