Racing Simulators: The Ultimate Guide

With the rise of Esports receiving more and more coverage with each passing day, it’s no surprise that racing simulators are becoming more commonplace in households. Not only is it a great way to compete against your friends and learn new tracks but it’s also a shed load of fun too!

The majority of professional racers, including F1 drivers, regularly set aside time to practice driving on simulators which helps them improve their driving skills and learn the tracks. More frequently, we’re seeing talented sim racers being recruited into real world racing too, which makes it the perfect time to get yourself into this hobby!

Why should I get into Sim Racing?

Safety

There’s an inherent chance that something might go wrong whilst out on track in real life which could cause thousands of pounds worth of damage to your beloved pride and joy, or even worse, yourself. If something goes wrong on a simulator, it’s simply a case of hitting the reset button and starting again.

A simulator will also help you improve your driving in the real world too. If you’ve not been on track or in a race environment before then learning in a virtual world will better prepare you if any eventualities do happen.

Cost

Initially, it might look like building the ultimate rig might be quite expensive, especially if you’re looking at some of the higher-end components.

But when you compare this to actually racing in real life, a sim rig can then look like a more attractive way of getting some race action in. Not only have you got the cost of buying or building your race car but there’s always money to be spent on fuel, consumables like tyres and brake pads, entry fees and so on and so on. Like we said in our previous point, there’s always the risk of causing damage too, which is going to cost even more money to put right.

Once you’ve got your rig setup there’s little to no costs to play, other than your electricity bill or subscription fees depending on your chosen simulator game.

Time

Ever heard the expression, ‘there needs to be more hours in the day’? Well, it’s no myth that racing takes up a lot of your time, from test sessions for the day and racing often lasting a whole weekend. A simulator is perfect to work around your busy schedule. Once it’s built you can be on the starting grid ready to go racing just a couple of minutes after switching on your PC or console.

Learning

Not only can you benefit from learning a cars characteristics, many professional drivers and drifters use sims to learn new tracks. That way, when it comes to driving that track in real life they’ve already got an idea of where the track is heading and also have a rough idea of braking markers too.

What equipment do I need?

Steering Wheel

It’s no surprise that at the very heart of a setup is the steering wheel. It can be quite daunting to begin with as there is a large variety of different wheels on the market all at different price points. Let’s start by talking about force feedback – this is what gives the wheel resistance to the steering wheel inputs – such as when the car oversteers the wheel will automatically try to rotate in the opposite direction, much like it would in real life.

Higher end wheels use a direct drive system that produce stronger force feedback and therefore are able to deliver a more realistic driving experience. These wheels include a strong electronic servomotor and a detachable wheel with a quick release that can be compatible with a real race car, allowing the user to use a variety of different wheels in shapes and sizes depending on personal preference. Entry and mid-level wheels utilise either a gear driven or belt driven system, which will provide less torque and won’t feel as engaging.

A lot of brands offer a steering wheel and pedal bundle which are very good value for money, for example the Thrustmaster TMX pro kit. Something like this would be perfect as an entry level wheel that’s compatible for both PC and XBOX.

Spend a little more and you’ll be looking at something like the Thrustmaster TS-PC wheel. Featuring a 40-watt brushless motor and Motor Cooling Embedded that will prevent the motor from losing power due to high temperatures over time. The new cooling allows the motor system to have 50% more dynamic response and 4 times greater stall force – the force when you’re holding the wheel steady, like in a long corner – than any previous Thrustmaster wheel.

Looking to get the ultimate wheel setup? Then you’ll be looking at buying a base and wheel separately. The Simucube 2 Ultimate is designed with the “only the very best will do” mindset. It kicks out a massive 32Nm of torque and is sure to provide an immersive racing simulation experience. You’ll then need a steering wheel to go with your base and you might be tempted with a Fanatec as they offer a range of different wheels suited to different disciplines. For example, if you race a lot of GT cars then a BMW GT2 wheel might be your go to option, likewise, if you play a lot of Formula 1 games then the specially designed F1 eSport might be the wheel of choice.

Pedals

Often the cheaper pedals that come as part of the bundle packages with a wheel are made of plastic and sometimes only feature an accelerator and brake pedal. Generally they don’t offer much in the way of pedal resistance and don’t feel like a pedal box would in real life. Spend a little more and you’ll get a pedal set with a clutch, and that’s made from a mix of metal and plastic or entirely from metal. Much like steering wheels, the more you spend, the closer they’ll feel to actually driving a real car.

Shifter & Handbrakes

Most steering wheels have paddle shifters, but if you want to experience sequential or H-pattern shifting then you’ll need to invest in a standalone shifter. The Thrustmaster TH8A add-on gear shifter is a worthwhile upgrade as it features 2 shift plates, a H-pattern and sequential.

If you’re into drifting or rallying, then you’ll need a handbrake to initiate some slides. The Thrustmaster TSS handbrake is not only a brilliant handbrake but also doubles up as a sequential shifter too!

Cockpits and Stands

Now you’ve got your hardware sorted you’ll probably be wondering where you’re going to mount it all.

Let’s start with some budget options like the Trak Racer FS3 wheel stand. Featuring an adjustable wheel mount, pedal plate and gear shifter mount this is perfect for those with limited space, simply put it in position in front of the screen and slide your chair in.

If you’re looking for something a bit more substantial and with that race car like position than a Trak Racer cockpit will be the go-to option. Available with or without a bucket seat, these rigs are sturdy and even come with monitor stands too. The advantage of having something like this is that they offer a greater degree of adjustability and because of the materials they’re constructed from they have zero flex. Trak Racer also offer a plethora of accessories too, so if you’d like to mount a keyboard or some speakers in the future, these can then be added at a later date.

PC or Console

This all depends on how seriously you want to get into sim racing. Racers playing on PC typically do so as there’s more wheel and pedal support and also a wider variety of compatible games. Some of the direct drive wheels are often only available for PC and sometimes come with buttons that can perform certain tasks, where this isn’t always possible on a console.

Most popular sim racing games are available for both PC and console, such as Assetto Corsa and Project Cars 2. However, some of the highly rated sim racers like iRacing and rFactor are PC only.

For the average hobbyist a console should suffice. However, those that are looking to take it a bit more seriously and compete online against professional drivers should get a PC.

Popular Games

iRacing

iRacing is an online game that is ran on a subscription-based service, where you pay for additional content such as cars and tracks. All iRacing content is officially licensed and laser scanned, meaning that the level of detail is extremely high and often its track accuracy is unparalleled to that of other games.

rFactor 2

Ever seen Formula 1 drivers practising on a sim? Well, chances are that they are using a system based on the rFactor platform called rFactor Pro which sadly isn’t available to the public. However, rFactor features highly realistic tire models and can truly help you hone your driving skills. This is an out and out simulator and is popular with serious sim racers and professionals.

Project Cars 2

Available across all platforms, Project Cars 2 is well liked across the community due to its vast array of cars and tracks. It also has a wide range of of weather scenarios available as well as a 24-hour night/dawn/dusk clock so you can replicate your favourite races. For the console user, this is one of the must-have games.

Assetto Corsa

A firm staple in the sim racing community and that’s Assetto Corsa. Although it doesn’t have a whole load of licensed content, it’s got an array of third-party mods for the PC version. Often considered as the gold standard in force feedback and driving feel, this shouldn’t go a miss. There’s also the latest version, which is called Assetto Corsa Competizione, which is the official Blancpain GT series game. It allows players to experience the real atmosphere of the FIA GT3 homologated championship, competing against official drivers, teams, cars and circuits.

What is the ultimate sim rig?

Each day we’re seeing more and more people starting to get involved in sim racing – whether that’s the XBOX or PS4 user looking to get away from using their pad and invest in an entry level sim rig to provide a more immersive experience, or the more serious racers upgrading to a PC and get involved with simulators such as iRacing. Well, if you’re looking at putting together a sim rig then you’ll want to read on as we explore the best options on the market for a range of different options.

XBOX Users

Entry Level

Let’s start by taking a look at an entry level option for XBOX users. As we all know, one of the main peripherals of a sim racing setup are the steering wheel and pedals. We’ve picked out the Thrustmaster TMX Pro Racing wheel and T3PA pedal set teamed up with a Trak Racer RS6 Mach 3. What’s great about this wheel/pedal setup is that should you decide in the future that you’ll switch to a PC, the wheel and pedals are still compatible, so you don’t need to worry about future proofing.

Premium Level

If you’re after something a little less basic, then we recommend the Trak Racer TR8 cockpit which is fully adjustable and features a monitor stand with a console shelf too. This particular rig is strong enough for a direct drive wheel, again, future proofed should you decide to upgrade at any point. Again, we head to Thrustmaster to take care of the peripherals with their TX-XW Racer Sparco P310 Competition Mod racing wheel and pedals. This wheel benefits from a powerful 40-watt brushless servomotor, so will provide more realistic force feedback as opposed to the entry level kit.

If you haven’t already got a decent TV to fill the monitor stand, we suggest the JVC LT-39C790 39” Smart LED TV which is available from Currys for only £199.00. Again, if you don’t already have the console, you’ll need to invest in one – Argos provide the Xbox One S 1TB All Digital Console for £199.99.

PC Users

So, you’re looking at PC setups, I guess you could say things are starting to get serious! If you do want to get involved in platforms like iRacing then you will need to invest in a PC, it’s as simple as that. These setups needn’t break the bank though, and the benefits of investing in a setup like the ones we’re about to look at sometimes far outweigh the cost of building a car in real life, which you can read about in our Ultimate Guide.

Entry Level

For the entry level option, we again opt for the Thrustmater TMX Pro Racing wheel and T3PA pedal set that we recommended for the go-to XBOX option as well as the Trak Racer RS6 Mach 3 rig. However, as the rig doesn’t feature a monitor stand, you’ll need to buy a monitor stand separately. The Trak Racer single monitor floor stand sits around the rig and can mount a TV from 22-60”. Check out the electriQ 24” 4K UHD 60Hz FreeSync HDR Gaming Monitor from LaptopsDirect, which is only £159.97 – the perfect smaller TV which features 4K quality, HDR, and AMD FreeSync which cuts out any stuttering and tearing.

You’ll also need accessories for your computer too, such as a keyboard and mouse if you don’t already have them. We recommend the Logitech K400 Plus wireless keyboard from Currys, costing £32.99 which is a bargain as it features a touchpad which can cut out the need for a mouse if you don’t want to use one.

Dedicated Setup

For those of you looking for a dedicated setup then, again, we opt for the Trak Racer TR8 cockpit and Thrustmaster TX-XW Sparco P310 wheel and pedals. If you’ve not already got a PC, then we recommend the custom built Tegiwa PC which is perfect for a single monitor setup. Based on the fantastic new Nvidia GeForce GTX 1660 Super, this PC is capable of achieving a steady 60+ FPS, with high or maximum graphics at 1080p. Again, the Logitech K400 keyboard is the go-to option on the accessories front.

On the monitor front, we suggest an ultra-wide curved display as it will you give a more immersive experience and you’ll benefit from seeing things in your peripheral vision too. Samsung’s 49″ G9 Odyssey offering, has an incredible 5120x1440p display which shows amazing detail and colours and with a refresh rate of 240Hz, it’ll easily keep up with the fastest paced games around.

Virtual Reality Setup

If you’re looking for the most immersive experience possible then you’ll want to get into Virtual Reality or VR for short. Again, using the same wheel/pedal combo as before but opting for the much sturdier Trak Racer TR80 cockpit. The TR80 is also much lighter than the RS6 and TR8 thanks to its extruded aluminium design. Extruded aluminium is often used to build complex structures and is the material of choice for sim rig designers for its versatility and expandability. You’ll also need to upgrade to a slightly more powerful PC than before to run VR. The custom built Tegiwa sim racing PC will come with the specification you need to run all of the latest and greatest sim racing software and more.

On the VR front, look no further than the Oculus Rift S headset. With their sharpest lenses and next gen optics you’ll literally see the action unfolding around you. The Rift S has an improved design which makes it much more comfortable than the previous version, which means you can keep playing for longer. Head over to Argos to pick up your headset for £399.99.

Monitor Setup

If you prefer to see what’s going on in your actual surroundings then you might prefer the more traditional monitor setup rather than the VR experience. You’ll need the same options as the VR setup but this time you’ll need Trak Racer’s monitor stand that neatly slots into the aluminium rig. Mount a Samsung G9 Odyssey 49″ Curved TV onto this from Overclockers and you’re well away onto the ultimate rig.

The ultimate setups

If you want to jump straight in at the deep end, then we’re about to show a couple of options for the ultimate gaming setups. Obviously, these rigs don’t come cheap, but you’ll have the ultimate simulator rig right in the comfort of your own home, ready to take on the best of the sim drivers out there.

Ultimate VR Setup

The TR80 rig and Tegiwa custom built gaming PC’s feature again but this time we utilise a direct drive steering wheel base from Sim-plicity. Their SW20 V3 control unit kicks out up to a whopping 20Nm of force, which is enough torque to warrant the kit being supplied with its very own emergency stop button. After talking to a number of people who use direct drive wheels, they all say the difference is night and day and it provides a much more realistic driving experience than when using a wheel with a standard motor.

Pair the base up with a Fanatec Formula ClubSport carbon wheel and you’re onto a winner. Featuring an authentic feeling quick release system and its life like size will make it feel like you’re driving a real car. It’s also got a built-in LED display that shows telemetry data such as speed, current gear, remaining fuel and other parameters, you’d be forgiven for thinking that this wheel had just been pulled straight out of a GT car.

Pedals are taken care of by Alien Zadrotti’s Sim Racing Pro Pedals. They are made from stainless steel and aluminium alloy as well as various polymers to provide durability and strength. The pedals utilise roller bearings rather than slide bearings as these do not give backlash over time. All 3 pedals have load cells which provide a realistic, sharp and accurate response.

Of course, you’ll need a single monitor to navigate your way around the PC itself, our preference here for the Tegiwa sim rig is the Samsung G9 Odyssey 49″ Curved TV. Team this lot up with an Oculus Rift S headset and you really have built yourself one of the most immersive gaming rigs out there.

We use one of our very own Tegiwa GT style seats which is perfect for those long stints behind the wheel. The seat is available for under £200 which is an absolute bargain, or if the rig is used by multiple people then you can choose to spec it with side mounts for full adjustability between drivers.

Just when you thought it couldn’t get any better, let’s add motion into the equation. By adding motion actuators onto your rig, you transform your somewhat static setup into a moving, life-like rig that will let you feel every bump and kerb on the track as well as the way the car is handling. Let’s take a look at Luke’s setup (Director of Tegiwa) for instance, he’s got the ultimate VR setup with motion actuators on all 4 corners of the rig to provide the most realistic and authentic feel. Motion doesn’t come cheap, but if you can afford it, it’s definitely something worth thinking about. We can provide motion on any of the sim rigs mentioned for a further £2,150.

Finally, it’s important to mention that you can spend as much or as little as you like on these setups. For example, if you already have a spare bucket seat lying around at home, you can buy the rigs without the seat, therefore bringing the cost down. Again, if you already have a PC, or opt for a different wheel setup, it will of course affect the pricing. Tegiwa BMW M8 GTE Championship – R5 Snetterton

We’ve just watched the final round of the season in the Tegiwa BMW M8 GTE Championship take place at Snetterton. It’s been a fantastic season with plenty of action and drama on offer in all 5 rounds. Race 1

We kept the same format that we used from Oulton Park last week, with 2 separate qualifying sessions and 2 races which made for double the championship points up for grabs. It was the usual suspects that made up the top 4 places on the grid in race 1, with Lewis Bibby leading from the start to claim his first victory of the evening. Rob Baker managed to climb from 3rd to 2nd but unfortunately an off saw him gift the place to Jake Hewlett who eventually finished in 2nd place. Baker, managed to send his damaged car acroos the line to finish in 3rd place.

Race 2

With all to play for in Race 2 and the championship title still firmly up for the taking, Bibby once again stuck his car on pole position. Rob Baker pulled out a cracking lap at the death to make for an Evo 1, 2 and Hewlett finished closely behind in 3rd place. A relatively uneventful race for the guys up top saw Bibby claim his second victory of the evening whilst Hewlett had got past Baker to take 2nd spot and ultimately claim the championship.

There wasn’t much in it in terms of points when it comes to the final championship standings, with Jake Hewlett clinching it by just 5 points from Lewis Bibby. Meanwhile, Rob Baker took 3rd place and Pete Harrod finished in 4th place respectively.

The Tegiwa lads all managed to finish inside the top 20 spots, with Jim Forsyth finishing in 12th spot, narrowly missing out on a top 10 finish by a mere 2 points. Connor Sheldon sits just behind him by 1 point in 13th place, whilst Luke Sedzikowski, the race organiser, ends up in 16th place.

Tegiwa BMW M8 GTE Championship – R4 Oulton Park

Tegiwa BMW M8 GTE Championship – R4 Oulton Park

We’ve just seen the action from the penultimate race of the Tegiwa BMW M8 GTE Championship at Oulton Park and as we saw last week, the standings were as open as ever. We decided to spice it up this week, with 2 separate races meaning that double the championship points were on offer. Unfortunately one of the joint leaders, Pete Harrod, couldn’t make the race so the rest of the pack were looking to capitalise and take as many points as they could to make up the gap at the top.

Race 1

The opening race saw Jake Hewlett take pole position and manage the lead to the chequered flag as he took victory. Adam Shepherd put in a storming lap to take 2nd place but got caught in a tangle which saw him drop down the field. It was Bibby who climbed 2 places and eventually took 2nd place, followed by Ben Sharpe in 3rd place.

Race 2

Race 2 saw Rob Baker take the front spot in qualifying with a very impressive 1:30.317, he was closely followed by Jake Hewlett who was keen to take as many points as possible to fight for victory in the championship.

For those that aren’t familiar with sim racing, then this would be the perfect showcase of what it’s all about. A super clean race between the front 3 of Baker, Hewlett and Bibby made for some real, nail-biting drama with all 3 drivers racing neck and neck and giving each other the respect they all deserved. However, at a track as tight and complex as Oulton Park, contact was pretty much inevitable when racing that closely. A tangle of the 3 front runners saw Bibby drop down the order into 5th place whilst Baker and Hewlett managed to retain their respective positions in 1st and 2nd. This enabled Ben Sharpe to seal a double podium as he eventually finished in 3rd place again and landed himself a decent haul of points.

It was pretty much a day to forget for team Tegiwa, as Luke and Connor had no real luck. However, Jim secured his best finishes of the season, finishing 7th in race 1 and 10th in race 2. With only 2 points separating Jim and Connor in the standings and Luke only 5 points behind, it’s going to be interesting to see who comes out on top as we head into the final round next week.

Tegiwa BMW M8 GTE Championship – R3 Silverstone

We’ve just made it past the halfway point of the season as last night we saw the action take place at Silverstone International. It was Lewis Bibby who took pole position, closely followed by Jake Hewlett in second place. With some exciting racing between the front 2 for the first half of the race, it was unfortunate that Hewlett ended up taking a shunt from a back marker which eventually saw him finish in 3rd place. Pete Harrod put in another impressive performance to finish 2nd and Bibby remained in charge and took the honours come the final lap.

The Tegiwa lads all managed to finish inside the top half of the standings this round too. Connor Sheldon put in an awesome performance as he worked his way up from 29th on the grid to 9th, however, an incident in his pit stop saw him finally drop back down to 14th place. Jim Forsyth put in a solid performance finishing in 16th place, whilst Luke Sedzikowski climbed up from 22nd place to finish in 17th.

Things are really starting to heat up now in the championship with Pete Harrod and Jake Hewlett tied at the top with 37 points and Lewis Bibby a mere 5 points behind in 3rd place. It really is all still to play for as we head into the tail end of the championship.

Tegiwa BMW M8 GTE Championship – R2 Circuit De Spa-Francorchamps

Last night we watched the action unfold from the world famous Spa Francorchamps in round 2 of the Tegiwa BMW M8 GTE Championship. What looked set to be an exciting battle heading into turn 1, unfortunately turned into a catastrophe as the cars suffered from net code on the lead up to the bus stop. It was Rob Baker, who came out the worst, spinning out onto the grass before he’d managed to cross the start line.

This saw Jake Hewlett pull away in pole position with Lewis Bibby, who qualified in 4th, now in 2nd place looking to make up the gap. However, a slow down later on in the race made this an almost impossible task for Bibby. Pete Harrod, the winner from last weeks race, worked his way up into 3rd place with Johan Akkerman finishing closely behind to round out the top 4.

The Tegiwa drivers had much more success this week, with the number 115 car of Connor Sheldon finishing in 8th place. Jim Forsyth dropped 4 places from his initial qualifying position to finish 19th, with Luke Sedzikowski ended up in 29th position.

Tegiwa BMW M8 GTE Championship – R1 Donington Park

Yesterday saw the first round of the Tegiwa BMW M8 GTE Championship begin from Donington Park. An unfortunate tangling in the opening lap didn’t seem to dampen spirits as the drivers, made up with a mixture of amateurs and real world racers, enjoyed a fantastic evening of competitive racing.

It was a close battle at the front of the pack with the top 4 in qualifying shuffling positions throughout the race. It was eventually Pete Harrod who took the honours after starting in second place, followed closely after by Jake Hewlett. Rob Baker was looking to make up some places after his victory in the practice round on Monday evening. However, after qualifying in 4th place and making his way into the lead, he was unlucky enough to get caught up with a back marker but managed to fight back to finish in 3rd place.

The lads running in the Tegiwa cars didn’t have much success in the opening round, with all 3 of them getting into mix ups in the opening lap. They were all pretty easy to spot though due to the lack of front bumper! Connor Sheldon enjoyed the most success, finishing in 15th place, whilst James Forsyth finished in 19th and Luke Sedzikowski in 25th.

Championship Standings

The next round takes place at the iconic Circuit De Spa-Francorchamps, and promises non-stop action from the off. The race will kick off at the same time next week, Wednesday 13th May 9pm BST and will again be streaming live on the EvoSR TV YouTube channel, which you can subscribe to here.

Tegiwa BMW M8 GTE Championship – Spring 2020

If you’ve been keeping up with our social media pages, you’ll be well aware that we’re hosting our very own championship on the increasingly popular iRacing platform. The inaugural round of the Spring 2020 championship kicks off on Wednesday 6^th May on the iconic Donington Park GP circuit. Check out the full calendar below.

All you’ll need to get involved is the iRacing software, the BMW M8 GTE and selected tracks that we’ll be racing on. We suggest downloading the car and tracks that you’ll need at the same time as a reasonable discount is applied.

Interested in participating? Simply head over to www.tegiwaimports.com/sim-racing-uk, download the application form, fill it in and email it back to admin@tegiwa.com. We’ll then issue you with a password that will enable you to join our server and compete in each of the 6 rounds.

Rules & Regulations

The rules and regulations are pretty simple too with each round taking place every Wednesday, commencing at 19:45 BST. We’ll be using a standard system to award drivers points based upon their finishing position. The lobby format will consist of a 60-minute practice, 15-minute qualifying session and a 40-minute race. We’ll also be enforcing a 20 incident limit for each race which means if you do reach this limit you will receive a stop-and-go penalty.

Obviously, we want to make this as fun and enjoyable as possible so any direct messages or abusive comments via any channels will not be tolerated and will result in removal from the league. See the full rules and regulations here.
