<p data-sourcepos="9:1-9:110">The idea of exploring the rallying discipline was appealing for several reasons. Firstly, we weren&#8217;t currently involved in this market, making it a fresh and exciting challenge. Secondly, the Tegiwa team had always expressed a keen interest in rally cars.</p>
<div class="container">Given these factors, we decided to transform our Civic FN2 into a rally car. The transition was a significant undertaking, but the potential rewards were well worth the effort. We&#8217;re excited to see how our new rally machine performs on the challenging off-road courses ahead. Let&#8217;s take a look at the parts that we needed to change to transform it form a circuit track car to a competition spec rally car!</div>

<p>The first change that we had to make was changing out some of the roll cage to comply with rally regulations. It&#8217;s a requirement that the roll cage must have a cross on both the rear and back session. This is because there&#8217;ll now be a co-driver in the car so the cage must be able to protect both the driver and the passenger.</p>

<p>Speaking of a passenger, we had to install a bucket seat for our co-driver. We now have two <a href="https://www.tegiwa.com/products/rrs-grip-2-fia-racing-seat-2020-large?_pos=2&amp;_psq=rrs+seat&amp;_ss=e&amp;_v=1.0"><strong>RRS Grip 2 wrap-around bucket seats</strong></a> which will not only keep occupants comfy, but it&#8217;ll also keep them safe too.</p>

<p>We upgraded to a more robust YSR suspension system with adjustable dampers and softer springs, designed to handle the rough terrain and absorb impacts of rallying. This meant swapping out the <a href="https://www.tegiwa.com/products/ysr-premium-competition-coilovers-honda-civic-fn2-07-11-type-r-inverted?_pos=1&amp;_psq=premium+competition+inverted+fn2&amp;_ss=e&amp;_v=1.0"><strong>Premium Competition Inverted Coilovers</strong></a> for a set of <a href="https://www.tegiwa.com/products/ysr-advanced-pro-plus-tarmac-rally-3-way-coilovers-honda-civic-fn2-07-11-type-r?_pos=1&amp;_psq=ysr+fn2+advanced&amp;_ss=e&amp;_v=1.0"><strong>Advanced Pro Plus Tarmac 3-way Adjustable coilovers</strong></a>.</p>

<p>We&#8217;ve also installed a YSR hydraulic handbrake that will enable us to lock the rear wheels to initiate entry into tight hairpins.</p>

<p>The YSR 6 piston big brake kit that we already had on the car on the front axle will stay, we have just switched over to <a href="https://www.tegiwa.com/products/hawk-performance-hp-plus-road-and-track-brake-pads-ysr-front-bbk-yscpf4a-yscpf6a-rear-rear-yscpr6b-4-pot-6-pot"><strong>Hawk Performance HP+ brake pads</strong></a> as they have an amazing initial response as they require little to zero warming up.</p>

<p>Rally tires are specifically designed for off-road conditions, providing excellent traction and durability. We fitted narrower but stronger wheels on this car. These are a 17&#215;7.5J which will be mounted with a set of 210/625/17 Yokohama A051T rally tyres. This is an older size of tyre and harder to obtain with most 17&#8243; tyres utilising a 190 width now.</p>

<p>We upgraded the helical LSD to a <a href="https://www.tegiwa.com/products/mfactory-metal-plate-lsd-differential-honda-civic-type-r-ep3-fn2-k20"><strong>MFactory 2-way metal plate LSD</strong></a> that will aid in delivering traction on the loose terrain. Using a 2-way LSD means that it locks as much under braking as it does as accelerating. We also upgraded the gear set with a <a href="https://www.tegiwa.com/products/mfactory-close-ratio-gears-honda-civic-type-r-ep3-k20a?variant=47317781446952"><strong>MFactory Close Ratios</strong></a> which will allow for faster acceleration.</p>

<p>Rallying can be a rough sport, so we protected the vital underneath areas of the car with skid plates. The main under tray for the engine was kindly supplied by <a href="https://sump-guard.co.uk/"><strong>sump-guard.co.uk</strong></a> with the rest being designed in-house at Tegiwa which will be available to purchase soon!</p>
<p>Rally cars must meet strict safety standards. We installed RRS harnesses, and another fire extinguisher system so that we can help out others in case of an emergency. We also made the choice to go for a <a href="https://www.heatedwindscreen.com/collections/heated-windscreens/products/honda-civic-type-r-2006-heated-windscreen-fn"><strong>heated windscreen</strong></a>, which was kindly supplied by <a href="https://www.heatedwindscreen.com/"><strong>Ricky Evans Motorsport</strong></a>. This is a game changer as the windscreen can de-mist from the click of a button and they are more reliable than heater units.</p>

<p>To get a bit more oomph out of the K20Z, a set of <strong><a href="https://www.tegiwa.com/products/skunk2-ultra-stage-1-camshafts-cams-honda-k-series-k20-k24">Skunk2 Ultra Camshafts</a></strong> were installed as well as a <a href="https://www.tegiwa.com/products/tegiwa-4-2-1-exhaust-manifold-header-decat-honda-civic-type-r-fn2-07-11"><strong>Tegiwa 4-2-1 exhaust manifold</strong></a> that will help to unlock a few more horsepower.</p>

<p>There&#8217;s been a tonne of parts added to the inside of the car that include an <a href="https://www.tegiwa.com/products/omp-spare-wheel-supp-spanner-holder"><strong>OMP spare wheel holder</strong></a> and a <a href="https://www.tegiwa.com/products/omp-zeronoise-amplifier-pit-linkWindows:"><strong>ZeroNoise amplifier</strong></a> to enable communication between the driver and co-driver and even a first aid kit!</p>

<p>Luke, our driver, who also has to make the switch from circuit to rally driving has had to ascertain his <a href="https://www.philprice.co.uk/courses/msuk-bars-license-exam/"><strong>BARS rally license</strong></a> too which will enable him to compete. He did the BARS Plus course at the <a href="https://www.philprice.co.uk/courses/msuk-bars-license-exam/"><strong>Phil Price Rally School</strong></a> which gave him a day of driving between a RWD and 4WD Impreza on different surfaces. Needless to say that the test was ever in doubt and Luke passed with flying colours!</p>

<p>We&#8217;ve already booked onto our first stage rally events. The first is the Adgespeed Stages at 3 Sisters Circuit in Wigan on Sunday 13th October. We have then booked onto the Cadwell Park Rally on Sunday 17th November.</p>
<p>We&#8217;ve then jumped on board the <a href="https://www.doningtonrally.co.uk/"><strong>Donington Park Stage Rally</strong></a> and become the headline sponsor for this event which we are super excited for! Not only will we be competing, but we&#8217;ll also have our trade stand on display too. This will be the final event of the year for us and we hope to see as many of you there as possible.</p>

<p>For those of you that have been following Tegiwa over the years, you may remember our first FN2. Built for the Civic Cup in 2014, that car had a whole host of performance parts that were relatively new to the market at the time including our exhaust manifold, cat-back exhaust system and air box.</p>

<p>7 years on and we’re back with another FN2 that’s ready for the racetrack! The car originally came to us as a development for another project that we had planned, however, that never materialised so we ended up with a Civic sitting in our car park that looked quite sorry for itself. <p>This car has been built specifically for a 1 make championship series, although what series that is remains to be seen. What we can tell you though, is that the FN2 will make its inaugural outing at the end of September at <strong>Go Japan!</strong> Replacing our Honda NSX in the Pro 2WD class whilst it’s being rebuilt at <strong>BourneHPP</strong>. Until then, you can grab a brew as we delve deeper into the specs!</p>
<p><strong>Engine</strong><strong> </strong></p>
<p>The 8<sup>th</sup> generation of Civic Type R made use of the iconic K-Series engine in the form of the K20Z variant. Kicking out 198bhp in stock form, our FN2 should be making a little bit more than that as we expect to see 170bhp per tonne from it. Cold air is induced from the <strong>Tegiwa cold air intake</strong>, which not only helps the engine breathe more efficiently but gives a lovely induction noise too. A <strong>Tegiwa 100 cel 70mm race cat downpipe</strong> mates up to our <a href="https://www.tegiwaimports.com/tegiwa-70mm-cat-back-exhaust-honda-civic-type-r-fn2-07-11.html"><strong>70mm cat-back exhaust</strong></a>, which produces a great note whilst producing relatively low noise levels to accommodate for the track. There’s nothing fancy happening here other than the intake and exhaust system, but we have had a <strong>bespoke remap</strong> to help achieve a bit more power and efficiency out of the modifications.</p>

<p><strong>Transmission &amp; Suspension</strong></p>
<p>Although it’s not the most powerful vehicle in the fleet, most modifications have been chosen to improve handling. It’s no surprise that <strong>Yellow Speed Racing</strong> was our go-to suspension choice with a set of their <a href="https://www.tegiwaimports.com/yellow-speed-racing-premium-competitioncoilovers-honda-civic-fn2-07-11.html"><strong>Premium Competition Inverted coilovers</strong></a>. Featuring 33-way adjustability, these inverted coilovers are proven in numerous championships and provide the most durable and competitive damping whilst being robust enough to take the rigours of competitive motorsport.</p>

<p>The car has been fully kitted out with new bushes from <strong>PolyBush</strong> to maintain durability, whilst <a href="https://www.tegiwaimports.com/eibach-camber-shim-spacers-1-0-degree-civic-07-11.html"><strong>Eibach camber</strong></a> and <a href="https://www.tegiwaimports.com/eibach-toe-shim-spacers-0-5-degree-civic-07-11.html"><strong>toe shim spacers</strong></a> make their way onto the car to help us dial in the perfect geometry. Finally, an <a href="https://www.tegiwaimports.com/mfactory-honda-civic-type-r-ep3-integra-dc5-k20a-helical-lsd-differential.html"><strong>MFactory Helical Stage 1 Racepack LSD</strong></a> has been installed in the gearbox to provide smooth and consistent distribution of power to the wheels.</p>
<p><strong>Wheels &amp; Brakes</strong><strong> </strong></p>
<p>Stopping is taken care of by a set of <a href="https://www.tegiwaimports.com/pagid-oe-blank-front-brake-discs-ep3-fn2-civic-type-r.html"><strong>Pagid OE blank discs</strong></a> and <a href="https://www.tegiwaimports.com/pbs-prorace-front-brake-pads-honda-civic-ep3-fn2-type-r-s2000.html"><strong>PBS ProRace</strong></a> pads up front and <a href="https://www.tegiwaimports.com/pbs-protrack-rear-brake-pads-honda-civic-type-r-fn2-07-11.html"><strong>ProTrack pads</strong></a> at the rear. We don’t need to be overkill on the brakes as it’s not pushing too much power and is much lighter than a standard FN2. To eliminate the risk of unreliable brakes on track and giving a much better pedal feel we added a set of <a href="https://www.tegiwaimports.com/racing-performance-brake-lines-hoses-honda-civic-type-r-fn2-07-11.html"><strong>RPB brake hoses.</strong></a></p>
<p>Our wheel of choice for the FN2 were a set of bronze <a href="https://www.tegiwaimports.com/rota-force-alloy-wheel.html"><strong>Rota Force alloys</strong></a>. Retaining the OEM 17” diameter but opting for a slightly wider 8J wheel all round means that we can run a set of Pirelli slicks from our BTCC DC5 on the car, perfect to meet the requirements for Time Attack Pro 2WD.</p>

<p><strong>Interior</strong><strong> </strong></p>
<p>At first glance it’s fair to say there’s not much left of the interior. As its sole purpose is to be as fast as possible, anything that isn’t needed has been ripped out on a mission to save weight. A <a href="https://www.tegiwaimports.com/safety-devices-multi-point-bolt-in-roll-cage-h036-honda-civic-type-r-fn2-06-62.html"><strong>Safety Devices Bolt-In cage</strong></a> has been added to ensure driver safety should the worst happen, and also meet mandatory requirements when racing in most series in the UK.</p>

<p>A <a href="https://www.tegiwaimports.com/rrs-grip-2-fia-racing-seat-2020.html"><strong>RRS Grip 2 bucket seat</strong></a> with an <a href="https://www.tegiwaimports.com/omp-da0208h-first-harness-2-belts-6-point-race-rally-motorsport-fia-8853-2016.html"><strong>OMP 6-point harness</strong></a> will keep Luke, our driver, firmly held in place. We’ve also installed a <a href="https://www.tegiwaimports.com/rrs-ecofirex-fia-mechanical-fire-extinguisher-4-25l-complete-kit.html"><strong>RRS EcoFirex 4.25 litre fire extinguisher</strong></a> to keep in-line with regulations. The interior is finished off with a <strong>RRS Traject 330mm steering wheel</strong> which is mated to a <a href="https://www.tegiwaimports.com/hkb-steering-wheel-boss-kit-honda-civic-ek-ep3-s2000-non-airbag.html"><strong>HKB steering wheel boss kit</strong></a>.</p>

<p><strong>Exterior</strong><strong> </strong></p>
<p>The outside of the car remains largely standard other than the bespoke livery designed in-house here at Tegiwa and installed by Chris and his team from <strong>CN Signs</strong>. Keeping the original theme of the Tegiwa FN2 from 2014, the new wrap has slightly more going on and an influx of fluorescent yellow accents to make sure it can’t be missed on the track!</p>
